Be Lost

We're supposed to be figuring it out—all the time and without end.

We walk our own path through this world. Feeling a little "lost" on the journey is exactly how we should feel. No one has ever walked the path we're on. Every step is an exploration.

While uncertainty is uncomfortable, it's reassuring! It affirms that we are in uncharted territory—right where we belong. If we always knew where to go, it'd mean we're following someone else's path—living their exact life. That—while also impossible—would completely miss the point.

I've said this before: we are creative by nature; we are novelty machines. We're here to do new things—to create original art; enjoy different experiences; tackle unique challenges; confront our own demons.

We are here to live a novel life. So, when we feel "lost," we're really in the pocket. When we have absolutely no clue what we're doing, we're in the zone of peak-novelty.

Why then, does it feel so...bad? Why all the stress and anxiety?

Because we told ourselves we're supposed to know what we're doing.
We believe other people know what they're doing.
We think society demands we have it all figured out.

But that's all nonsense. Every single living person is trying to figure out what the hell they're doing and they—like us—will never "succeed." The moment we get one thing down, we move onto the next: if our career is dialed we'll move to our connections; if our relationships are amazing we'll get existential. It never ends.

The pain comes in fighting what's natural—like wanting things to stay the same when change is inevitable.

So, if you're ever feeling hopelessly lost: amazing. Take a deep breath. You're doing exactly what you're supposed to do. Try to figure it out. Wing it. Experiment. Play.

Embrace the opportunity to blaze that new trail—it's a gift.

And on behalf of the rest of us: thank you for doing you.
