To the Soldiers

When called: we do answer,
When summoned: we ring our bells,
When beckoned: we stand,
When needed: we squirm in our seats and stay shy.

We may echo the rallying cries sung through the halls,
We may spring into action as battle draws close,
We may rise and ready our minds to die for our own,
But when it’s Us they need, we cower.

They may have our arms,
They may have our body,
They may have our soul,
But our selves? Why, what good would they serve?

Fearless, we face dragons banging at our door,
With fire, we rage against the night,
Without reservation we join our brothers at war,
Yet it’s lies we offer the cries for our truth.

We cannot believe in the difference we make,
Lest it only be our blood they seek,
And so in our doubt, we withhold our aide,
While the world withers and our love sleeps.
