When Spring Didn't Come

It began in April.

I saw a blue jay fall from its perch, and sink, instead of fly.

I saw a leaf turn red before the flowers had a chance to bloom.

I saw snow freeze ever colder, choking the streams that were greedy for thaw’s runoff.

I saw a bear slink to its den to continue its slumber.

I saw the sun dipping low in the sky.

I saw men and women huddle for warmth.

I saw children’s teeth chattering through blue lips.

I saw winter claw its way back into the world.

We were not ready for renewal.

So the Earth withheld the spring.
